I left the country on the 1st of May due to a emergency. I took out travel insurance on the 9th of May several days after I arrived. I rung the insurance company prior to taking it out. They said yes that’s fine. I was hospitalized with a ruptured cyst, we rung the insurance company before hand, they said yes that’s fine, you’re OK to go to the hospital. I now get a email from the insurance company saying because I’ve been traveling since the 20th of April (but didn’t leave my home country until the 1st of May), they have cancelled my policy and are not paying out. I read through all the paperwork once again, all I could find is “you must have resided in your country of residence for at least the past 3 months and the trip must be departing and returning from there” which it did. It’s not saying you have to take out the insurance prior to your trip anywhere.
What do I do? I have to go back to my home country for a week in less than 4 weeks and then returning to the U.S.. Am I able to leave the U.S without paying the bill? Like I said, I am coming back in, but on a different visa.
im sure you can claim the money back when you get home. I dont think there is a time limit on travel insurance claims
Travel insurance doesn’t “count” for a trip already in progress, at the time you buy it. You have to buy it BEFORE you leave on your trip.
It ALSO doesn’t cover anything that was already wrong, before you left the country.
What to do? You’ll end up having to work out a payment plan for that hospital bill. And it could affect your reentry to the USA, if you let the bill go long enough.
