I used to have long hair and I got it cut into a bob. It was slightly in layers and with a fringe like this: http://spuddybuddies.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/twilight8-300×225.png

Maintaining it is easy. Brush it twice a day, once in the morning, once at night. You can use a good wax on it to make it stick out like the link above. Herbal Essences is great for my hair, a lovely shine :) .
    Good luck!

i did the same with my hair about 4 weeks ago…btw best thing u can do 4 the summer. although i have to blow dry and straighten it every day. my hair is wavy as well n with my cut it just doesn’t look nice unless its straight. it will depend on how short u go.

The short you go, the easier to maintain and the more stylish it will look. The back should be undercut, optional on the sides. I think layer look better, but then it is more of a pixie haircut.Good luck.
