I’m hoping someone can help. I am a non-resident Canadian citizen who got my nationality from my Canadian mother when I was born overseas. I want to pass my Canadian nationality to my children, which now means I must travel to Canada to give birth (because the Citizen Act was changed in April 2009 and limits citizenship to the first generation born outside Canada – that’s me).
As I’m not resident, I am not entitled to health care covered by the government. Does anybody know what happens if I go to Canada to give birth? I plan to travel within medical guidelines, so I am really just looking for information on how I would get care. If I have private insurance, would the hospital a) bill the company and b) if I don’t have insurance, would they bill me (which is fine, but just wondering, because someone told me they wouldn’t bill an individual)?
The cities I’m looking at are Montreal or Toronto (don’t know if this makes a difference).
Also, if anybody knows of any procedural issues, or has done this before, I would be grateful for the advice!
Thanks.
PS I posted this question earlier today, but then messed up when I tried to add addition details so reposting here.
My current health insurance is international, so at the moment, it wouldn’t be a problem. Don’t know how long I will have it, which is why I’m wondering about personal billing.

Are you serious! Your asking Canadians about an issue on billing in which you want to not be billed for it!! IN which we pay for YOUR pregnancy! Go have it back in your own country!! And yes you do get billed! You can skip out on it as they try to bill you later, but don’t ever except to be able to come back in Canada again after it, as you will now owe Canada big money! I don’t even care about getting the best answer! Go somewhere else, I don’t care that your mother is Canadian… You are just a bigger user and abuser.
You say you are a Canadian citizen, because your mother was one. Okay. In order to establish your future progeny as Canadians, they have to be born in Canada. Your best bet would be to return to Canada. You have to reside in Canada for a year to re-establish your rights as a Canadian, (including your right to medicare) so you would have to find a place to live and work for a year, then have your child, which would be Canadian by birth.
