You must become the Executor of the Estate.

This is a part of the probate process.

You need to contact the court or clerical area that handles probate for the county in which he died. The will tell you what you need — generally…for an ex-wife, you need a copy of his will that names you as his executor.

The usual process is (1) get the Executor paper work, (2) get a Tax ID for the estate, (3) open a bank account for the estate, (4) deposit the check into the estate bank account, & (5) pay all bills from the estate bank account.

You can’t cash it, it’s not your money. You CAN deposit it to HIS account, and then whoever is authorized to write checks from his account – his estate administrator or estate executor – can pay the bills of the estate.

The check is NOT yours. It belongs to your ex-husband’s estate. Contact the person handling his estate.
