I work in an insurance job. I have been here for a year, they have spent the past year training me. I like the job, I consider it fun but I really miss travelling and backpacking. I really would like to see most of the world before I am 30. Right now, I am 25 years old. I have my education, I have good work experience. If I leave and take a year offf, chances are, the company I work for won’t hire me again. Should I take the risk and just take off backpacking? I figured its better to travel now than try doing it when I am old. (and no, taking two week vacations a year is completely lame and I dont consider that to be travelling)

Insurance jobs are a dime a dozen. If you can afford to take a year off to travel, I say go for it.
Just don’t forget to spin the year off into something career building when you include it on your resume…and yes, you should include it on your resume. Nothing looks worse than a big blank spot.
