One response to “Living expenses in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada?”

I have lived in Regina since 2001, so hopefully I can be of some assistance. Here is a breakdown, first, of living expenses:

Rent – Depending on where you live and the size of the place, expect between $600 and $1500 per month. The area near the university and the newer neighbourhoods will generally be a lot more expensive than some of the older neighbourhoods. For example, a 3-bedroom townhouse near the university is around $1000 per month. The same 3-bedroom townhouse (literally, same company, floor plan, etc) in Glencairn is $750 per month. If you are looking at purchasing a home, Regina’s real estate market has not really felt the affects of the recession yet. Houses will range from $100,000 (in the not-so-nice areas) to $1,000,000 (think massive and luxurious). For the normal family dwelling, estimate between $200,000 and $500,000 depending on the area.

Groceries – I would estimate around $100 per person per month, depending on your diet. It’s no more or less expensive than anywhere else in Canada. We have the same stores (Superstore, Sobeys, Safeway, Co-op, and Walmart).

Travel to work – If you are driving, budget around $20 per week. For taking the bus, it’s more like $5 per week. Our gas is a little more expensive in Saskatchewan than most other places in Canada. However, our commute is pretty short. You can usually get anywhere in the city within 15 minutes.

Internet/TV/Phone – Sasktel has the cheapest rates in Canada for bundling your internet phone and cable. They actually offer rebates annually if they find that their rates have exceeded any of the major companies. We spend around $150 per month for our cell phones, unlimited long distance, internet, and cable package with almost every channel (including the movie pack). If you went without all of the features (basic cable, no long distance bundles, etc), it would probably cost you around $60 per month for internet, phone, and cable.

Car Insurance – SGI is relatively inexpensive for car insurance. This all depends on the make, model, and year of your vehicle. If you go to their website (www.sgi.sk.ca) you can get a quote for car insurance for your personal vehicle. For our 2009 SUV, we pay around $1000 per year, and it’s around $750 per year for our 2006 car.

Other expenses – Our monthly heating, water, and electricity bills come to around $200. If you are in an apartment, you will likely only be responsible for the electricity portion of things. In a townhouse or condo, you will likely be paying heating and water as well.

Entertainment – Regina has a lot of things to do. Depending on your interests, I would budget around $200 per month for entertainment. Of course, you can get by on a lot less than this. My husband and I like to eat out and usually go for beers with some friends once a week. A movie ticket at the first run theatre is $10 except for 1/2 price Tuesdays. I believe that the cheap theatre charges $4 and have a 1/2 price day as well. There are also concerts, golf courses, CFL and WHL games (football and hockey), bars and lounges, tons of restaurants, and other stuff like the science centre, museum, art gallery, and other events in Wascana Park. We also have Buffalo Days (the annual summer fair), the Regina Symphony Orchestra, the Globe Theatre, Mosaic (our annual cultural festival), Yuk Yuks (comedy club), Applause Feast and Folley, and different events that happen at the university. Plus, there are different trade shows, etc. that the city has annually (everything from sex to food to agriculture).

Crime Rate – Regina has a bad reputation of being the crime capital of Canada. Honestly, this is due, in majority, to property theft (car break-ins, etc). I have never felt unsafe on the streets of Regina. In fact, I often forget to lock the doors to my house and car and have never been broken into. There are certain high crime areas of the city. If you stay out of these areas, there is no reason to feel unsafe. A lot of our crime happens due to the extremely cold winters. There is a large increase in crime rates around September. Why? People who are homeless commit petty crimes so that they can spend the winter in prison. Seriously, if you check out Regina’s crime stats, I think that you will find that this holds true.
