Hi. Around three or four days ago, I woke up feeling as if I had a canker sore on the back of my gum. I know many will tell me to go to the dentist, but I want to make sure I need to before my mom wastes the money, we don’t have insurance right now. Anyway, The placement is so far back that even my mom can’t see it with a flashlight. The pain is focused at the very end of my top gum rack, near the top. When I actually feel for the sore with my tongue, it feels as if it is placed on a flap by the gum, but that might just be because its a canker sore. I can’t feel it very well. I’m thirteen and my wisdom teeth haven’t come in yet, so I’m thinking that might be it, but i didn’t know if they caused sores. The pain is pretty bad but at times, I forget about it. It hurts badly after eating, no matter the texture or hardness of the food, even if I chew on the other side of my mouth. I have crooked teeth, but my teeth are fairly strong and I’ve had no actual problems. I do get canker sores often, but never on my gums. The pain extends when I move my jaw extensively, to talk or sing, and sometimes travels to my cheek, jaw and general area. I can’t fit any ice or cream back there its too far. I’ve been gargling salt water also. thanks for the help!
I those too. I’ve had the them for a few months the pain and swelling should go down. Put some Oragel on it to num the pain. Sorry i ain’t much help.
If it’s a canker sore it will respond by putting salt directly on it (yes, it hurts for about 10 seconds), or purchase an over the counter medication called Abreva (about $13). It will ease the pain and help it to heal faster. Cankers usually go away by themselves within 7-10 days. If you still have pain a week from now, something else is obviously causing the problem, and it’s time to see the dentist (there are low-cost dental clinics run by an organization called ‘good samaritan’.
I think you are a bit young for wisdom teeth. They usually start to come in between the ages of 18 and 25.
For now, go buy some Abreva to alleviate the pain.
Love & Blessings
How old are you? If you’re 16+ years old then it is the TIME!!!!
TIME means that you’re about to grow your WISDOM TOOTH!!! That is probably the nastiest, gruesome thing that will happen to your life. It will also hurt for the first few weeks (3 weeks)….. When i started feeling some pain in my gums i was like “mom lets go to the dentist”, and my mom said “no”….
After couple of weeks i see some developments on the gum that was in pain. I feel like a tooth was about to come out. I was like “WHAT IS THIS?”. Then I asked my mom and she said “It’s probably your WISDOM TOOTH”…
It could be your WISDOM TOOTH that is about to come out….
Hope this helps….
P.S. The process of growing a wisdom tooth could go longer… (3 months)
You’ll be in a deep pain… I survived though, so that means you can survive also…. Just don’t feel it with your TONGUE!!!
It sounds like your wisdom tooth is trying to come in.It could be infected also. If your teeth are already crooked your wisdom tooth does not have room to come through without trying to move your other teeth. Wisdom teeth are most of the time painful when coming in especially if you don’t have room. You really need to have them pulled when they come in because they might make your teeth more crooked.
Don’t worry. Gently treat them with any of the following suggestions, and you’ll be feeling better within a week.
Keeping in mind that stress brings canker sores, you might want to try a wonderful homeopathic stress remedy called Hylands Calms Forte. Look into it. i love the stuff! i take 1 tablet for nervous anxiety, or 3 to get to sleep when you’re restless.
Excellent over-the-counter tool to try: Kanka. i prefer the one with a brush applicator. It can be found in most drug stores or walmart. i think in time one can build up a tolerance for it, though. the following home remedies work even more effectively.
I’ve found some help in a book from the 80s/90s that i swear by. It is called The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies, edited by William Gottlieb…… you don’t have to try them all to get better. here ya go:
**Alert: stubborn sores should be checked out. if it lasts longer than 2 wks, you may need more serious medication.**
1. products combining glycerine and peroxide are helpful. peroxide releases oxygen and cleans up the bacteria. the glycerine puts on a coating and helps protect the sore. (Gly-Oxide brand name)
2. apply a wet black tea bag to the ulcer. black tea contains tannin, an astringent that can relieve pain.
3. dilute 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water and swish it around in your mouth to disinfect the sore and speed healing. (this has worked wonders for me!!)
4. Alum, from the spice rack, is the active ingredient in a styptic pencil. it’s an antiseptic and pain reliever, but it won’t completely get rid of your sore.
5. swish mylanta or milk of magnesia around your mouth and allow it to protectively coat the sore.
6. goldenseal root. make a strong tea of it and use it as a mouthwash.
7. AVOID irritation: coffee, spices, citrus fruit, nuts high in the amino acid arginine (esp. walnuts), chocolate, and strawberries. brush your teeth carefully.
8. eat 4 tbsp of unflavored yogurt a day to send in helpful bacteria to fight off the bad bacteria. (note: maybe just take some acidophilus?)
9. here’s a weird one: take a little earwax from your ear and apply it to the canker sore. it’s said to be a sure cure. it may have some antiseptic value, and it may protect the sore.
10. squeeze vitamin E oil from a capsule onto the sore. repeat several times a day to keep the tissue well-oiled. and at the first tingle of a canker sore, take 500 mg of vit C with bioflavinoids 3 times a day for the next 3 days. (This has helped me!!)
11. you can’t underestimate the power of a little dab of Vicks VapoRub. it numbs pain and speeds healing. just be careful because it isn’t meant to be edible. I really do mean just use a LITTLE TINY BIT, okay? Don’t swallow it and make yourself sick!
