you can get insurance from a local company or agent…however you can join the AAU and they cover you.

I guess ‘need’ is a little strong a word, but as the manager you are responsible–if any teammates sue, they sue you! You could try to get by without it, and it helps if you have people sign the “I understand that you can get hurt playing ball” waiver, but insurance is the only way to be sure you aren’t left holding the bag if someone decides to sue.
I know that insurance doubles the cost of a league, but softball is relatively inexpensive anyway–can you pass the cost on to the team?
If you get insurance from AAU OR NSA they only cover their tournaments if you get it from ASA they cover every tournament from every sponser
