I know about insurance, driving at night, and staying on toll roads. I will be in a small SUV. My wife speaks fluent spanish and we have traveled by bus in Mexico before. However, we have two small children and are apprehensive even though we think it should be okay.
Please only respond if YOU have driven in Mexico, not with what you heard from a friend of a friend. Thanks!
We are also worried about the increasing drug violence in the country.

I feel the same as you do. I’ve driven in Mexico so many times it defies belief, but I too have kids so I’ve recently been paying the extra money to fly down so I avoid the problems of drug gang violence in the border cities, military checkpoints, etc. (I also saw some articles last week in “El Norte” about police asking for bribes from the paisanos driving back into Mexico…doesn’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy about the government’s anti-corruption crackdowns.)
I think you’d be okay too. The stats are certainly in your favor. It’s just all those scary stories that keep bothering me. Even knowing that the violence is focused on drug criminals and police, I worry for the safety of my little guys….and so I fly for now.
You seem to know what you’re doing, and I feel confident that you should drive. I am a 25 year old female with only basic spanish skills and I made it from VA to the border crossing at El Paso and down to PV with no problems. If I can do it, anyone can!
