One response to “HSBC travel insurance question?”

According to the HSBC policy I found on-line (link below)….

This policy is primarily designed as medical expenses cover, computer equipment is classed as ‘valuables’ (page 7) which as far as I can see are only covered if you take out the optional ‘baggage’ protection (page 19). Even then, there is a £400 limit on valuables in total and a £300 limit on any single item, so the most you would get for your laptop is £300. There is also a £50 excess, so in reality you’d get less.

For example if you had your laptop (£830) and a camera (say £170) stolen, although you’d have lost £1,000 worth of kit you’d only get paid £350 from this policy (£400 total limit – £50 excess).

So whilst yes, it is covered, you’d get less than half of the £830 value back, add a camera and a few other ‘valuables’ in (phone etc) and you could get considerably less than half since a total of £400 applies to all such items.

The best way to cover higher value items like a laptops etc is usually by extending your home contents insurance to cover them whilst out of the house, nearly all UK contents policies allow you to do this.
