Travel insurance is sort of like insuring a new TV when you buy it and the store asks you if you want to insure it. The odds are good that you’ll never need it, and the TV (and the trip to Rome) will work out just fine, and you’ll have wasted money.

However, if something does happen, you’ll be out the money. So, is it worth the risk to you to maybe be out the money? Or do you feel better spending for the insurance and this way you know you’ll only lose that money if you don’t use the insurance?

It’s a personal choice, depending on what you like to risk. Personally, I’ve travelled all over the place and never bought travel insurance, and nothing ever happened that I couldn’t handle for far less money than the insurance would have cost me.

It is not illegal, although some travel groups require the coverage. It won’t be a waste of money if you need it.

It is not illegal. As far as getting some, I think there are several factors involved in getting travel insurance.

    1. Is anyone in, or close relative, sick? If so, your odds of needing to cancel increase.
    2. Cost. Is it going to be $150 to insure a $10,000 trip or $300 to insure a $2000 trip? To me, I would insure the $10,000 trip for the $150 but not the other.
    3. Which insurance company you use. Check travel boards and travel forums: cruisecritic.com, foders.com, etc.. and see if anyone else has posted about travel insurance. You want to make sure the insurance company actually comes through when needed.

    Hope this helps
