STRONGLY suggest she remains in her own country and gives birth…she will not be able to travel and highly doubtful any insurance company will cover her and the birth in the USA and the USA will certainly NOT suck up the cost.

NO, there is NO insurance that will cover the costs of your wife’s delivery. If you want a US citizen baby, you will have to pay for the delivery yourself, which will cost at least $8,000 if there are no complications. If your wife does not pay the hospital bill, you will have to deal with a collection agency, which can sue you to recover the costs. If you don’t want to go into debt, your wife should deliver in her country and then come to the US.

Usually universities require that students have health insurance and will offer health insurance for a fee. She should call the university health office and ask them if she can sign up for that coverage as an international student and if it would cover pre-existing conditions like pregnancy/delivery related expenses. I think some insurance companies don’t pay if the person is already pregnant before they sign up for the insurance. If she is eligible and it will pay for her hospital expenses she should sign up for it as soon as possible, and get paperwork and plan description faxed to her. That way she will have documentation when she enters the country.

Whether or not she can actually get into the country is another issue though. That would be up to the actual agents she sees at customs checkpoint? If they are worried that she will not pay her hospital bills or will otherwise wind up relying on the US government they will not let her in. That’s why I say to get the paperwork from the insurance company, she should show it at customs if asked.

In terms of the university, she may have problems with her classes if she has to take time off to give birth. She may wind up failing her courses if she can’t work out an arrangement or get her work done in a reasonable time period. The university health office can probably give her some answers on that too, I think the school may be required to give her some time off and/or extension of deadlines when she has to be out for medical reasons [giving birth, recovering, etc]

Anyway, it doesn’t sound at all practical to me but it might be possible. Personally I wouldn’t recommend it though.

She might get denied at the border if she is pregnant…or at the very least they will check for insurance and finances to cover the birth. If you can’t afford 10 grand plus for a pregnancy in the US, they could very well say no.

Wait, you say you don’t have insurance yet? Well you will have a hard time finding a willing provider at the 6th month of pregnancy.

Stay home until after the baby is born. If she is able to even find insurance that would cover her,it will be extremely expensive. She would not qualify for any government insurance in the US. Or,she will have to pay for the birth and related expenses herself which could run easily $20,000. She is responsible for all her expenses, the university has no obligation.
If she is visibly pregnant, she may not be allowed to fly.

Although visibly pregnant women can and do fly internationally all the time (usually up until 30 days before due date) that isn’t the big concern. She in all likely hood will be refused admission onto a plane, for the simple fact that she is pregnant and in all likely hood got the visa under false pretenses. Did she disclose she was pregnant when she applied for the visa? If not, she won’t be going to the US. US agents in your country will pull her to the side and question her. Once they find out she committed visa fraud her visa will be revoked.
