I need to change my flight to a different date, but since my travel insurance won’t give me a refund and the cancellation/change fees are pretty high, is it possible for me to just not show up to that flight and book a flight on a different date? I’m basically trying to get out of the change/cancellation fees. Will I be billed some kind of cancellation fee if I don’t show up? I understand I won’t be getting a refund, I have no other choice.

They can’t charge you anymore if you miss the flight can they. Also your travel insurance will pay up if your friends car taking you to the airport breaks down and you miss the flight, won’t they.
Have you talked with the airline to find out exactly what it will cost for changing the date, or for missing the original flight? Are the change fees really higher than the cost of a completely new ticket?
I don’t believe that airlines generally charge you anything for not showing up – but all remaining legs of that ticket will be canceled.
If this is the last leg of the trip, then you will be fine. However, if this is not the last leg, the rest of your trip will be canceled.
You can just abandon the whole trip and not take any of the flights on the itinerary. There is no additional penalty and they don’t track you down. It happens regularly when people buy non-refundable tickets then can’t take the trip.
You can go ahead a book another complete trip. What you cannot do is try to use any portion of that first trip (such as the return flight). It’s all-or-nothing. Airlines will cancel the remainder of the itinerary after a no-show. Don’t worry, they won’t cancel your new trip, just the original one.
You can but I would think that buying a new ticket would be more expensive. Go ahead and see how much the flight costs if you fly on the date you are able to and compare that with the cost of changing the date. I think by changing the date, the cost would be lower than buying a whole new ticket.
