I’m a Canadian citizen and was traveling in US. I borrowed by my friend’s car with US insurance and hit a parked car in downtown one day. Then I panicked and fled.
I think the insurance company of the car that got hit called my friend the same day. I’m so afraid now. Will I go to jail ?
You wont go to jail more than likely you will get a citation for leaving the scene of a crime and a few others for the accident and such
As you know that was a stupid thing to do. But given that you’re a Canadian who commited the crime in the US, it’s rather unlikely that the insurer can get you directly, even if they know your name.
But you should hope that you have a mighty loyal friend who won’t rat you out to the insurer. With your name in hand the US insurer could report the incident to your regional DMV who can in turn report the incident to your private insurer. Your name, DOB, and plate # are on file and it would be rather easy for them to track you down. The result would most likely be demerit points assigned to your driver’s record which could result in higher insurance premiums for you. Now you know why people often stick around after the fender bender.
No, you wont go to jail, so don’t worry about that. But however, what will happen is you will be fined for fleeing the scene. So all you will have to do is pay for what damages were caused. You don’t have to worry about going to jail or anything like that, it’s not like you slammed into the car at full speed.
