Generally, no. Talk to the airline, but usually you cannot change the name on the reservation.
no you can not change the person on airline reservation. what you can do is to get a new reservation. nope getting insurance will not make any difference. insurance is there just incase something will happen to you or your companion.
You may be able to cancel the ticket, and recieve a credit (minus a $100 service fee) from the airline. Use the credit to purchase a seat for your new companion.
Here’s what the continental website says about non-refunable tickets-

Good luck with the change!
If you purchased travel insurance for your traveling companion, and the companion is now ill and cannot travel, yes — the travel insurance should reimburse you for the cost of the companion’s ticket (and also for your ticket, if you wish).
Depending on the policy, most travel insurance plans include medical conditions as a covered reason for cancellation. (This depends on the policy’s plan, and whether the illness is a pre-existing condition. Travel insurance is really very complicated — read the plan documents to see if the illness is covered.)
The travel insurance policy will have a phone number for the claims department — call claims first and find out the procedure for filing a claim to insure you do everything correctly. They will probably assign you a claim number and email you the claim form.
The second step will be to cancel your companion’s ticket — do this before the flight departs or the ticket will have no value.
Then, purchase a new ticket for the other person with whom you will be traveling.
Airline tickets are non-transferable — you cannot change a name; any credit given for a non-used ticket cannot be used for a different person. Some of the rules are even more restrictive, it all depends on the ticket you purchased. When you call Continental to cancel your companion’s ticket, the reservationist will be able to tell you the exact rules for that ticket.
Good luck!
some tickets have exceptions allowing refunds if passenger gets sick or dies (!)…depends on the ticketing class, check it out. Don’t see that YOUR insurance would have anything to do with your companion’s situation…
